A Nerd

It's official, I'm a nerd. I guess "nerd" is a relative term. I've always had plenty of friends and I've gotten along well with others, but part of me is just....different...you know, NERDY.

I'll do a reverse rundown of my day to provide support for my "nerd" rating. Tonight we had a retirement party for a teacher at my work. We had a great time, but it was over by 8 and some of the other teachers and I were talking about how our hubbies were watching the kids so it would be fun to hang out. This is where the "nerd" comes in. In my mind "hang out" means 1. Coffee, 2. Dessert, 3. and activity like a movie or bowling. No, I'm not in 8th grade, I'm just me. So I suggest these ideas and they look at me like I'm, well, a nerd. Apparently the "cool" adults only hang out at bars(or lounges or pubs, call it what you like). I guess I just don't really see the point. I mean, I don't mind social drinking like wine or beer with dinner (which they all had already enjoyed- not me, I don't drink), but since drinking alcohol and driving can be illegal if you've had too much, I guess I just don't see the point in driving to another destination to drink. Can't we just talk over coffee or while bowling? Everyone only had one drink, but it still felt weird to me. I almost felt like I was in high school again as one of the teachers told me about how one day they were going to take me out and make me drink. No thanks. What's the big deal? It's like if we went to coffee and someone got decaf and I felt the need to pressure them into getting caffeine. WHO CARES?!

So anyways, I couldn't get over the fact that MOST people in America think this a normal way of socializing. I realize it is, but it just seems so different to me. I told Justin it felt like a normal day in the lunch room, only it was dark and everyone had a drink. It's the nerd in me again. I like to do something when I hang out. It was fun to spend time with women I get along with, but it just felt so foreign to me. Honestly, I 've been to like 3 bars in my whole life and each time I felt awkward.... Okay, enough of my rant about how socializing always has to be at bars.

Other reasons for the "nerd" label. Before the retirement party, I had spent the entire day doing a craft project with my SIL Alisha. Based on our inspiration piece from Anthroplogie, we made an apron using some fabric I already had. It turned out really cute, although this picture doesn't do it justice (neither of us wanted to model it becuase we hadn't showered). Anyways, we spent the entire day in our gruby clothes...SEWING, and we loved every moment of it. Now, hopefully my crafty friends don't take offense to this, but at my work, my craftiness makes me a nerd. (I guess that means that I should change my "Bridge Bunch" label to "Nerd Herd" :) right? ) When I tell them I sew and garden, they look at me like I need to get a life. If I'm a nerd, what do "cool" people do for hobbies?

So there you have it....

No Drinking=NERD
"Activities"=NERD
Crafty= NERD

Barbie=NERD :) and happy to be one.

That is ok Barbie, I don't really drink either. It doesn't agree with my uber sensitive stomach. And.. since I was the one who was sweing with you all day.. does that make me a nerd. I think so. And maybe the fact that while you sewed I embroidered makes me right up there int he nerdy category. Oh and because I use words like "uber".. LOL But I like to be nerdy, it is much more fun.. and productive. ;) even though we didn't shower!!!

That apron is sooo cute. And I'm a nerd too. I know lots of nerdy people just like me. I also don't get the whole going out for drinks thing and would much rather have coffee or go bowling. You are not alone!

I love your nerdiness Barbie, because Im one too. Really, I dont understand the adult peer pressure to drink, Ive got it a lot here too! It feels so juvenile to me. I have good friends that drink wine at dinner, etc and they are totally fine with me not drinking, but then there are some who always make a comment. I wouldve so been up for the evening you had in mind.

OMIGOSH that apron is SO cute! bravo to you two!
and I'm all down for coffee, dessert, maybe bowling (but I'm warning you I'm a sucky bowler and a sore loser=) and my idea of a great day is sewing in my pajamas or gardening in my grubbies. and so if that makes us nerds that oh well!

I LOVE being a nerd with you!=)

Yeah...I'm so a nerd. I will have 1 drink at a restaurant or something, but not at a bar. I think I have been to 1 or 2 bars in my life and didn't enjoy it at all. Back in college I was a nerd because I didn't want to go clubbing. I'm glad we're friends and we can be nerds together.

i think your work friends are the nerds. anyone who thinks they are cool is automatically a nerd to me. stuck in high school. i feel sorry for them, really. and alcohol tastes like listerene to me. if anyone tries to push it on me i get really annoyed. i would rather have chocolate milk or cookies dipped in milk. so, i have the pallete of a 5 year old, who cares!!!i don't care if they drink, so why do they care if I don't?

and your apron is adorable.

Barb you know where I stand...I am a #1 NERD and on sat night Mike and I had to go to a good good friends bday party at a club and all I wanted to do was keep talking over dessert with Matt and Teri....so we kept talking till like after 11pm then I realized I had to leave and go make an apperance at the party-we stayed 45 min then came home....My idea of a good night is staying home with mike cuddling on the coach eating pop corn over a movie or connecting with friends-conversing, crafting, laughing, doing an activity...so anyhow the most important thing is that we are happy and leading a full life!! Also tell me the secrets to your apron...the edging?!

Ahh...thanks girls, I'm glad I've got such "cool" friends. Really, I knew where most of you would stand on this (that's why we're friends :) ), but it is encouraging to hear it!

As for the apron, we didn't use a pattern, we just used our inspiration picture and we traced a halter top. We'd sew it and decide we need to move it down, so we'd fold it over and sew it again, LOL. I'm totally a wing it girl.

Misha, ruffle edging is super easy! You just cut a 3 inch strip and iron it in half like a hotdog bun. Then you sew a straight line along the open edges without doubling back. Pull on the bottom thread and push the fabric to bunch (kinda like a draw string) Keep bunching to the middle then do the other side.

Oh Barbie,
Well, I always thought you were pretty cool and still do. I wish I had a green thumb and could sew. I guess that makes me a big "wanna be."

I think I have another category of nerdiness to add that you don't encompass (I don't think). So I'm even nerdier than you. Going to bed early. I mean really early, like between 9-10. I suppose I'd rather be nerdy that super co-dependent on what everyone around me thinks!

You are not a nerd at all. If those girls made you feel dumb for not wanting a drink then that is definitely immature. I have friends that drink and friends that don't and none of us ever guilt someone for not drinking. I enjoy a glass of wine at a bar (well, more like a restaurant) and I enjoy a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Neither one is any more or less fun to me. As long as I'm in the company of friends. Hopefully those girls can have fun without drinks. Oh, and the apron is absolutely adorable!
