Man, I was in desperate need of some sleep for that last post. Sometimes, it's just nice to have a place to vent. I also didn't drink enough water that day, and my body is definitely effected when I'm dehydrated. The next day I was SOOO swollen! I mean everywhere! Which brings me to the topic of today's blog...things you hear when you're pregnant.
Now, I'm totally not one of those people who get irritated by the largeness comments (probably because I'm aware of my enormity), or the belly touching (unless it's some creepy guy), or even the random comments and questions about stuff that's pretty personal. I'm a pretty open book and will usually discuss whatever you want to discuss, but sometimes I can't help but laugh at what people feel comfortable saying. For instance, last Thursday upon arriving at work my VP told me I looked "terrible". Mostly out of concern for my well being, but still, not something you love to hear ;) . She had Toxemia (sp?) when she was pregnant with her kids, and she said that she noticed I was unusually swollen...everywhere. I knew it was just because I was dehydrated. It didn't stop there that morning. Another male teacher commented on how "terrible" I looked also. I was starting to feel pretty self-conscious. :)
Rewind a couple of weeks to when my principal is telling me about how my long term sub won't be available due to health issue. I'm in the middle of taking it all in...her diagnosis, my need to find a sub, etc...when he loudly exclaims, "Oh my goodness!" Concerned about his reaction I look at him and he's pointing to my hands. "Are your hands always that big or are you just swollen?" Seriously?! In front of my whole class too. I laugh. His reaction was so inappropriate it was funny, given the circumstances. I tell him that they are slightly swollen (I can't wear my ring), but they are also naturally large. My dad jokes that he has paws instead of hands, and, well, I think that may be one of the only physical features I inherited from him. ;) I've always dreamed of pretty, petite hands, but I'm pretty sure lypo on my fingers would be too pricey. LOL. My principal goes on to talk about how he's always been embarrassed of his own hand so I must REALLY be embarrassed. He has stopped by a couple of time since to pop his head in my door, point to his hand and laugh. So mature!
And it just goes on from there... People in Walmart who say "we better not get in her way, she could pop at any second" or "wow, you must really be ready". There are also those people who comment on or imitate the waddling. Seriously, I'm carrying around an extra 30 pounds or so, I've skipped cankles and basically have thankles, and my shoe size has gone up one whole size. Am I really expected to walk like a sexy lady? LOL!
Based on the fact that I'm just going to get bigger from here, I imagine there will be many more comments in the future. The key is to take them in stride and know that some women would give ANYTHING to have this big belly to touch, these cankles, and most important, a sweet baby growing inside of them. :) I'm blessed to "look terrible" ;)

Oh, Barbie I completely understand. I, too, was huge and heard about it one way or another. Sometimes it is hard to keep the right perspective and a thankful heart when people are always sharing their observations. You are so good at seeing the positive.
Ummm...what is WITH people?? Really, it just shows your amazing nature that you're able to laugh it off- because with all the hormones going around when I'm pregnant, I'm not sure I'd be able to. 30 lbs is seriously NOT BAD! I gained 50 with Kate = )
First of all, you look AMAZING! Secondly, you are almost there! Enjoy this week and eat lots of yummy Thanksgiving treats. This is the time to do it!
...I dropped a bottle of coffee mate on my bad ankle the other day and fell to the ground in a puddle of tears! It hurt but not that bad, and I couldn't stop crying! I'm right there with ya!
That last couple of sentences sums it up so wonderfully! Just keep reminding yourself of that! :) Plus, look at your side bar, you only have 39+/- days left till you get to meet your little sweetie!!! HOW EXCITING!
And I think people need to learn how to use their "filters"!! I can't even imagine saying those things to someone I'm close to, let alone a COMPLETE STRANGER!
Unbelievable what people say! You are adorable!
I am always inspired by you to feel "less sensitive" when people say weird things to me. It's a good thing to develop a thicker skin...otherwise one will end up getting their feelings hurt all the time!
And I remember after I had Finn, I was bemoaning my flabby gut to Allyson and she said "I can't wait to earn my gut!" And she truly meant it! So having babies certainly can take a toll on us, but we are SO blessed and honored to have the privilege.
And love the new header!
I'm so glad that you're able to laugh it all off! I think you look great and you're so right about having to remember that it's all worth it in the end!
I just don't get people and the things they will say to others! Ugh! I'm so sorry you have to endure insensitive comments like that. I couldn't wear my ring towards the end either. I'm glad you're staying positive and remembering the blessing of this little one growing inside of you! :)
